Day 1 : Siem Reap-Banteay Chhmar
Travel from Siem Reap to Banteay Chhmar : Travel south a short distance to the pretty village of Banteay Chhmar and temple. A number of NGO projects are being carried out in this area and small communities of expats are resident here. It has become a centre for silk production and eco tourism. BanteayChhmar temple is known as the Temple of the Cat and was constructed in the tenth century. Little is know about the temple and it baffles many as very little water exists in the area.
It is surrounded by a massive moat and is one of the largest Angkorian complexes in Cambodia. Continue on to PrasatBanteay Torp, about 20 kilometres away, where a small temple sits atop a little hill enclosed by a two-kilometres-long wall. It was built in the same period as BanteayChhmar. We stay overnight in a home stay.
Day 2 : Banteay Chhmar-Prasat Tamuen-Anlong Veng
After breakfast, we depart by jungle road to visit Prasat Tamuean temple and have lunch at a local restaurant. Next we visit Prasat Ta Muean Thom, an ancient Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva. The temple was built in the era of the ancient Khmer empire Kampuchea and is located at the edge of the Dangrek (Dongrak) Mountain Chain next to an ancient travelling route from Angkor.
we set out to historic AnlongVeng, located 130 kilometres north of Siem Reap and about 100 kilometres east of PreahVihear. We arrive in AnlongVeng Town and have lunch here overlooking Ta Mok’s flooded forest.
Day 3 : Anlong Veng-Preah Vihea
We pass through a wildlife sanctuary on the way to Sra Em, and then on to TrapangPrasat. Next we travel 16 kilometres outside town to drive up the Dangrek Escarpment.
We take a tour of the mountain and see Pol Pot’s bunker, the remains of his house, and the location he was cremated. We can also visit the border between Cambodia and Thailand, a good place to buy army relics and supplies. We then travel the 16 kilometres back to town and stay overnight on the mountain with old Khmer Rouge cadres in their jungle hideout or in the town of Anlong Veng in a guest house.
Day 4 : Preah Vihear-Koh Ker-Beng Mealea-Siem Reap
Following breakfast, we travel 60 kilometres to Preah Vihear Temple, built between the ninth and twelfth century and jutting out over the edge of a cliff. We prepare to go back to Siem Reap in late afternoon.
